Shixiong (simplified: 师兄, traditional: 師兄, pinyin: shīxiōng, jyutping: si1 hing1), literally “elder brother in the teacher’s line,” is a term used to address or refer to an elder male fellow disciple—someone who studies under the same master (师父 — shīfū) and is senior in the lineage. Shī (师) means “teacher”; xiōng (兄) means “elder brother.”
Usage
In martial arts and traditional settings, shixiong is used both as a form of address (“Shixiong”) and as a reference (“my shixiong”). It implies respect for seniority within the same school or master’s line. A female elder fellow disciple is typically addressed as shījiě (师姐 — “elder sister in the teacher’s line”).
In Sword of the Yue Maiden
In Sword of the Yue Maiden, the term may appear in dialogue or narration when characters refer to senior fellow disciples or martial siblings, reflecting the hierarchical and familial language of the jianghu.
