Shi Wanchen (simplified: 石万嗔, traditional: 石萬嗔, pinyin: Shí Wànchēn, jyutping: sek6 maan6 can1) was an evil junior of the King of Venoms (毒手药王) and a master of poisons. He conspired with Tian Guinong and was eventually killed by Cheng Lingsu’s posthumous trap. He was a major antagonist in Side Story of the Flying Fox.
Biography
Apprenticeship and treachery
Shi Wanchen was a former apprentice of the King of Venoms, but his cruel and evil nature led to his expulsion from the Medicine King Manor. He was highly skilled in the use of poisons and was known for his treacherous methods.
He conspired with Tian Guinong to poison Hu Yidao and Miao Renfeng’s weapons during their duel, leading to Hu Yidao’s death. He also attempted to poison Miao Renfeng with “Heartbreak Grass” (断肠草) and later poisoned Hu Fei with a deadly蛊毒 (gǔdú) at the Medicine King Temple.
Conflict with Cheng Lingsu
Shi Wanchen was a bitter rival of Cheng Lingsu, his junior martial sister, who embodied their master’s benevolent spirit. He repeatedly attempted to seize the Medicine King Divine Record (药王神篇) from her.
During a confrontation at the Medicine King Temple, Cheng Lingsu, having anticipated his treachery, used her knowledge of poisons to outwit him. She had prepared a trap involving the Seven Heart Begonia (七心海棠) poison.
Death
Shi Wanchen was eventually killed by Cheng Lingsu’s posthumous trap. Blinded by the Seven Heart Begonia poison, he mistakenly drank his own concoction of deadly poison, dying a gruesome death as a consequence of his evil deeds.
Personality
Shi Wanchen was depicted as a cruel, cunning, and utterly ruthless villain. He was driven by malice and a desire to inflict suffering, using his knowledge of poisons for destructive purposes. His character served as a stark contrast to Cheng Lingsu’s compassionate nature.
