Shi Shugang

Shi Shugang

Shi Shugang (simplified: 史叔刚, traditional: 史叔剛, Jyutping: si2 suk1 gong1, pinyin: Shǐ Shūgāng), known as the Golden Armoured Lion King (金甲狮王) or Green Armoured Lion King (青甲狮王), was the third of the five Shi brothers who owned the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain Manor. He was the most skilled martial artist among his brothers and the one who learned profound internal energy from a mysterious master.

Biography

Early training and the mysterious master

In his twenties, Shi Shugang entered the mountains to capture wild beasts when he encountered a mysterious master who taught him extremely profound internal energy cultivation methods. This encounter transformed not only his own martial abilities but also those of his entire family, as he returned home and passed on these advanced techniques to his four brothers.

This training made the Shi family increasingly powerful, and their reputation in the martial arts world grew under the collective nickname “Tiger, Leopard, Lion, Elephant, and Monkey” (虎豹狮象猴). Among the five brothers, Shi Shugang was considered the most exceptional and transcendent in his abilities.

Injury by Prince Huo Dou

Shi Shugang’s life took a dramatic turn when he was seriously injured by Prince Huo Dou, a Mongol prince and disciple of Jinlun Guoshi. The injury occurred during what was described as a treacherous sneak attack while Shi Shugang was fighting for justice in Liangzhou. This internal injury proved extremely difficult to heal due to the unique nature of the martial arts he practiced.

The quest for the nine-tailed fox

The injury could only be treated with the blood of a nine-tailed spiritual fox, leading to an elaborate year-long quest by the Shi brothers to capture this legendary creature. Their efforts were complicated by the fox’s extreme intelligence and the difficult terrain of its lair in the Black Dragon Pond.

Encounter with Yang Guo

When Yang Guo intervened in the conflict between the Shi family and the Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave, Shi Shugang demonstrated his remarkable abilities even while severely ill. Despite his weakened condition, he managed to withstand three-tenths of Yang Guo’s palm force, impressing the legendary martial artist with his profound internal energy.

Yang Guo ultimately helped the family obtain the nine-tailed fox blood needed for Shi Shugang’s recovery, after which the brothers became loyal followers of the Divine Condor Hero.

Personality and traits

Character traits

Shi Shugang displayed remarkable fortitude and dignity even while suffering from his severe internal injuries. Despite being visibly ill - with sunken eyes, a sallow complexion, and unsteady movement - he maintained his sense of duty to protect his family and showed no self-pity about his condition.

He possessed a generous and forgiving nature, refusing to hold grudges against the Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave for accidentally disrupting their fox hunt, recognizing their actions as unintentional rather than malicious.

Leadership and wisdom

Among his brothers, Shi Shugang often served as a voice of reason and restraint. He could recognize superior martial abilities and knew when to yield, demonstrating both humility and practical wisdom in his interactions with masters like Yang Guo.

Martial arts abilities

Internal energy cultivation

Shi Shugang’s most remarkable ability was his profound internal energy, learned from the mysterious mountain master. Even while severely injured and weakened by illness, his internal power was so substantial that:

  • He could withstand significant force from Yang Guo’s palm techniques
  • His palm strikes carried tremendous power despite his weakened condition
  • He could break thick ropes with minimal effort
  • He remained standing during Yang Guo’s powerful whistle attack that felled most others

External combat techniques

His fighting style was characterized by:

  • Slow but Powerful Palm Techniques: His palm strikes were delivered slowly but with immense force
  • Lion-style Combat: His martial arts were based on lion movements and behaviors
  • Defensive Mastery: Even while ill, opponents found it difficult to approach him closely

Beast control abilities

As the “Lion King” of the family, Shi Shugang commanded one hundred lions in organized formations, demonstrating his mastery over these powerful predators through voice commands and presence.

Relationships

Family relationships

Shi Shugang held a special position within the family as both the one who brought advanced martial knowledge to his brothers and the one whose injury drove the family’s most desperate quest. His brothers’ devotion to saving his life demonstrated the deep bonds within the family.

Professional relationships

After his recovery, Shi Shugang became one of Yang Guo’s loyal followers, participating in events like the Heroes’ Conference at Xiangyang where he helped present gifts to Guo Xiang.

Rivalries

His encounter with Prince Huo Dou remained unresolved, with Shi Shugang expressing confidence that once fully healed, he could face the Mongol prince again in fair combat and achieve a different outcome.
