Shen Qinggang (simplified: 沈青刚, traditional: 沈青剛, pinyin: Shěn Qīnggāng, jyutping: sam2 cing1 gong1) was a martial artist and one of the Four Ghosts of the Yellow River during the late Song Dynasty. As a member of this notorious group, he served Wanyan Honglie and was involved in the attempt to capture Temüjin during the confrontation at the cliff.
Biography
Service to Wanyan Honglie
Shen Qinggang and his fellow Four Ghosts of the Yellow River were employed by Wanyan Honglie to capture Temüjin. They accompanied the Jin prince during the confrontation at the cliff, where Wanyan Honglie demanded Temujin’s surrender.
Attempt to capture Temujin
When Wanyan Honglie ordered the capture of Temüjin, Shen Qinggang and his three companions rushed up the mountain using their qinggong skills. They were skilled martial artists, not ordinary soldiers, and were able to deflect the arrows shot by Zhebie and Borchu using soft shields.
Defeat by Ke Zhen’e
Shen Qinggang and his companions were defeated by Ke Zhen’e, who threw them down the mountain one by one. Despite their martial arts skills, they were no match for the Jiangnan Seven Eccentrics member’s superior abilities.
Escape with Wanyan Honglie
After the defeat of Wang Khan and Jamukha’s forces, Shen Qinggang and the other Four Ghosts fought their way out of the chaos, protecting Wanyan Honglie as they fled back to Zhongdu.
Battle at Niujia Village
Shen Qinggang later accompanied Yang Kang to Niujia Village, swinging his Broken Soul Saber while the other ghosts hemmed in Guo Jing. Guo Jing locked the saber and hurled Shen into his own allies, leaving him sprawled among smashed wine jars—a defeat that underscored how far the Seven Eccentrics and their disciple had progressed.
Ambush of the Mongol envoys
During the subsequent ambush on Tolui and Zhebie’s envoy party, Shen again acted as vanguard, slashing at the escort before Guo Jing arrived. Once the formation collapsed, he fled alongside Wanyan Honglie towards Zhongdu; the novel never revisits him after this rout.

Behind the scenes
Shen Qinggang’s character represents the professional mercenaries who operated in the jianghu during the late Song Dynasty, willing to serve various masters for payment. Different editions of The Legend of the Condor Heroes tweak his brief appearances—some explicitly note his collapse at Niujia Village, while others skip directly to the envoy ambush—yet all iterations keep him as the “Broken Soul Saber” who helps showcase Guo Jing’s rapid growth.
