Biography
Historical background
Red Maiden was a historical figure (though her existence is debated by some historians) who is said to have been a performer or martial artist who became involved in the rebellions during the final years of the Ming dynasty. According to historical accounts, she was known for her skills in rope walking or acrobatics, which led to her being called “Red Maiden” (红娘子 — Hóngniángzǐ).
In the novel, Red Maiden’s historical role is incorporated into the fictional narrative, with her relationship with Li Yan being a key element of the story.
Meeting and marriage to Li Yan
According to historical accounts, Red Maiden was originally a performer or martial artist who led a rebellion. She encountered Li Yan (originally named Li Xin), a scholar from Qixian, Henan, who had gained a reputation for helping the people during a time of famine.
The historical accounts describe a dramatic story: Red Maiden, impressed by Li Yan’s character and reputation, captured him and forced him to marry her. However, Li Yan escaped and returned home, where he was arrested by local officials who accused him of being involved with the rebels. Red Maiden then led her forces to rescue Li Yan, attacking the county seat and freeing him from prison.
After this rescue, Li Yan joined the rebellion and married Red Maiden, becoming one of Li Zicheng’s advisors. Li Zicheng gave Li Yan the name “Yan” (岩 — meaning “rock” or “cliff”), symbolising his steadfastness and reliability.
