Old Man Jia (simplified: 贾老, traditional: 賈老, pinyin: Jiǎ Lǎo, jyutping: gaa2 lou5) was a mysterious host who encountered Duan Yu and his companions during their travels. He offered them hospitality in his mountain residence during a heavy rainstorm.
Biography
Encounter with Duan Yu’s party
Old Man Jia encountered Duan Yu and his companions (Zhu Danchen, Ba Tianshi, and others) during their travels when they sought shelter from a heavy rainstorm. He invited them into his residence, which was elegantly furnished with calligraphy and paintings, unlike typical rural dwellings.
The mysterious painting
Old Man Jia showed his guests a painting that was missing several characters in its inscription. Duan Yu was able to complete the missing characters, which greatly impressed Old Man Jia. He explained that the painting was created by a deceased friend who had intended to complete the inscription but fell ill and died before he could do so.
Hospitality and suspicion
Old Man Jia provided generous hospitality to his guests, serving them wine and food. However, his behavior raised suspicions among Duan Yu’s companions, particularly Zhu Danchen and Ba Tianshi, who noticed that his residence was unusually elegant for a rural setting and that his attitude changed after Duan Yu completed the painting.
Mysterious departure
After the rain stopped, Duan Yu and his companions departed from Old Man Jia’s residence. The group remained suspicious of his true intentions, with Ba Tianshi commenting that Old Man Jia’s behaviour had been strange and that he might have had malicious intentions that changed after witnessing Duan Yu’s scholarly abilities.
