Mu Daoren

Mu Daoren

Mu Daoren (Chinese: 木道人, pinyin: Mù Dàorén; literally “Taoist Wood” or “Daoist of the Wood”) is a significant character in Gu Long’s Lu Xiaofeng series. He is a Taoist priest — a figure who, in the wuxia tradition, often occupies a space between the spiritual and the martial. Mu Daoren is a skilled martial artist, a knowledgeable sage, and a man whose true nature is more complex than his religious title might suggest.

In the world of Gu Long’s fiction, religious figures are rarely what they seem. Buddhist monks can be villains (as with Wu Hua), and Taoist priests can harbour ambitions that extend far beyond spiritual practice. Mu Daoren fits this pattern — his outward piety and religious authority mask a personality that is driven by worldly desires and ambitions.

Appearance and personality

Mu Daoren presents the image of a traditional Taoist priest — robed, composed, and carrying himself with the measured calm of someone who has spent years in meditation and study. His appearance suggests wisdom and detachment, and many people in the jianghu treat him with the respect due to a religious authority.

But Mu Daoren’s personality is more complex than his appearance suggests. He is ambitious, calculating, and driven by a desire for power and influence. He uses his position as a Taoist priest to gain access to information, contacts, and opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to him. His religious identity is, at least in part, a tool — a means to an end rather than an end in itself.

Despite his ambition, Mu Daoren is not a simple villain. He is intelligent, cultured, and capable of genuine insight. His moral complexity is one of the things that makes him interesting — he is not purely evil, but he is certainly not purely good either. He occupies the grey area that Gu Long’s best characters inhabit.

Mu Daoren is also proud. He takes pride in his martial skill, his intelligence, and his position. This pride makes him vulnerable to manipulation and to his own overconfidence — a weakness that Lu Xiaofeng and other characters exploit.

Martial arts

As a Taoist priest, Mu Daoren has received extensive martial arts training rooted in Taoist traditions:

  • Taoist sword technique: Mu Daoren is a skilled swordsman, wielding a sword with the precision and discipline expected of a trained Taoist martial artist. His style draws on Taoist principles of balance, flow, and natural movement.
  • Internal energy cultivation: Taoist martial arts place heavy emphasis on internal energy (qi) cultivation, and Mu Daoren is no exception. His internal energy is deep and well-developed, giving him strength, endurance, and resilience.
  • Tactical intelligence: Mu Daoren’s greatest asset in combat is his mind. He plans carefully, reads his opponents, and adapts his strategy as needed. He is a thinking fighter, not a brawler.
  • Wudang connection: Mu Daoren is associated with Wudang (Wu-tang) martial arts traditions, which are among the most respected in the jianghu. This connection gives him both martial credibility and social status.

Role in the Lu Xiaofeng series

Mu Daoren plays a significant role in the Lu Xiaofeng series as a character whose true nature is gradually revealed. Initially, he appears to be a wise and respected Taoist priest — an ally and advisor to Lu Xiaofeng. But as the series progresses, it becomes clear that Mu Daoren has his own agenda and that his intentions are not as pure as they first appear.

The revelation of Mu Daoren’s true nature is one of the significant plot points of the series. It demonstrates Gu Long’s recurring theme of the disconnect between appearance and reality — the idea that the people who seem most trustworthy are sometimes the most dangerous.

Mu Daoren’s ambitions extend beyond personal power. He seeks influence over the jianghu, and he uses his position, his martial skill, and his intelligence to advance his goals. His schemes are sophisticated and carefully planned, making him a genuinely dangerous antagonist.

Relationship with Lu Xiaofeng

The relationship between Mu Daoren and Lu Xiaofeng is characterised by a gradual shift from trust to suspicion to confrontation. Initially, Lu Xiaofeng respects Mu Daoren as a wise and knowledgeable figure. But as events unfold, Lu Xiaofeng begins to see through Mu Daoren’s facade and realises that the Taoist priest is not what he seems.

Lu Xiaofeng’s ability to see through deception is one of his defining traits, and his confrontation with Mu Daoren demonstrates this ability at its best. He does not accept appearances at face value — he investigates, questions, and ultimately uncovers the truth.
