Madam Liu

Madam Liu

Madam Liu (simplified: 刘夫人, traditional: 劉夫人, pinyin: Liú Fūrén, jyutping: lau4 fu1 jan4) was the wife of Liu Zhengfeng and mother of Young Master Liu, Liu Jing, and Liu Qin. She was tragically killed along with most of her family during the Songshan School’s massacre at the Golden Basin Handwashing ceremony.

Biography

Madam Liu was the wife of Liu Zhengfeng, a prominent master of the South Hengshan School. She was a devoted wife and mother, raising three children with her husband. Her life was closely tied to the martial arts world through her husband’s position in the Hengshan School.

Golden Basin Handwashing ceremony

When Liu Zhengfeng decided to hold a “Golden Basin Handwashing” ceremony to formally retire from the jianghu and dedicate himself to music, Madam Liu and her family were present to support him. The ceremony was meant to be a celebration of Liu Zhengfeng’s friendship with Qu Yang of the Sun Moon Order and his transition to a new life.

However, the Songshan School, led by Zuo Lengchan, used this opportunity to attack Liu Zhengfeng and his family. Under the command of Fei Bin, Ding Mian, and Lu Bai, Songshan disciples brutally massacred Liu Zhengfeng’s family and disciples.

Death

Madam Liu was killed by Di Xiu, one of the Songshan disciples, during the massacre. Her death, along with that of her elder son and daughter, was part of the Songshan School’s ruthless campaign to eliminate anyone associated with Liu Zhengfeng’s “treason” of befriending a member of the Sun Moon Order.

Personality & traits

As a minor character, Madam Liu’s personality is not deeply explored in the novel. She was presumably a loving wife and mother who supported her husband’s decisions. Her presence at the ceremony demonstrates her loyalty to her family and her willingness to stand by Liu Zhengfeng despite the risks.

Martial arts abilities

Madam Liu was not described as a martial artist. She was a civilian member of the Liu family, whose life was tragically caught up in the brutal power struggles of the jianghu.

Relationships

  • Liu Zhengfeng: Her husband, whose friendship with Qu Yang led to the family’s tragedy.
  • Young Master Liu: Her elder son, who was also killed in the massacre.
  • Liu Jing: Her daughter, who was also killed in the massacre.
  • Liu Qin: Her younger son, the only family member to survive.

Behind the scenes

Madam Liu’s character represents the innocent victims of the jianghu’s brutal sectarian conflicts. Her death, along with that of her children, highlights the devastating consequences of the Songshan School’s ruthless pursuit of power and their intolerance of any association with the Sun Moon Order. Her character contributes to the tragic weight of Liu Zhengfeng’s story and underscores the theme that innocent people are often caught in the crossfire of martial arts politics.
