Hui Zhen

Huizhen (simplified: 慧真, traditional: 慧真, pinyin: Huì Zhēn, jyutping: wai6 zan1) was a disciple of Great Master Xuanbei from Shaolin Order. He plays a crucial role in delivering the tragic news of his master’s death and seeking justice for the murder, which becomes a significant plot point in the story.

Biography

Huizhen was a middle-aged monk from Shaolin Order, described as having a “dry and withered” appearance. He served as one of Great Master Xuanbei’s four disciples and was sent with his fellow disciple Huiguan to deliver an official letter to the Dali royal family. The letter was addressed to both the Baoding Emperor (保定皇爷) and Prince Zhennan (镇南王) Duan Zhengchun, requesting their assistance and protection for Great Master Xuanbei’s upcoming visit to Dali.

The turning point in Huizhen’s mission occurred when he and his companions discovered that Great Master Xuanbei had been murdered at Shenjie Temple in Luliang Prefecture (陆凉州). The discovery was made on the morning of the 29th, when the four disciples found their master’s cold body in the temple’s main hall.

Huizhen reported that there were no signs of struggle in the temple, suggesting that Great Master Xuanbei was killed by a surprise attack or assassination. The cause of death was revealed to be a strike to the chest using the “Great Vajra Pestle” (大韦陀杵) technique, which was Great Master Xuanbei’s own signature move.

Huizhen and Huiguan traveled to Dali to report the murder to the royal family. The Dali royal family received them with appropriate respect and ceremony, and the Baoding Emperor and Prince Zhennan responded with condolences and promises of assistance.

Master Wuye of Shenjie Temple suggested that the murderer was likely from the Gusu Murong Family, with a confidence level of 80-90%.
