Huangtaiji

Huangtaiji (simplified: 皇太极, traditional: 皇太極, pinyin: Huángtàijí, jyutping: wong4 taai3 gik6) was the second khan of the Later Jin (后金 — Hòujīn) and the first emperor of the Qing dynasty. In Sword Stained with Royal Blood, he appears as the Later Jin emperor when Yuan Chengzhi attempts to assassinate him, but the attempt is thwarted by Yuzhenzi, who captures and defeats Yuan Chengzhi.

Biography

Historical background

Huangtaiji was a real historical figure who lived from 1592 to 1643. He was the eighth son of Nurhaci and succeeded his father as khan of the Later Jin in 1626. In 1636, he declared himself emperor and changed the name of the state from Later Jin to Qing (清), establishing the Qing dynasty. He is posthumously known as Qing Taizong (清太宗), the “Great Ancestor of the Qing”.

In the novel, Huangtaiji appears during Yuan Chengzhi’s attempted assassination, which represents one of the key encounters between the protagonist and the Later Jin leadership.

Succession to the Later Jin

After Nurhaci’s death in 1626, Huangtaiji succeeded his father as khan of the Later Jin. He continued his father’s policies of expansion and consolidation, building on the foundation that Nurhaci had established. During his reign, the Later Jin forces became increasingly powerful and posed an ever-greater threat to the Ming dynasty.

Establishment of the Qing dynasty

In 1636, Huangtaiji declared himself emperor and changed the name of the state from Later Jin to Qing. This marked the formal establishment of the Qing dynasty, which would eventually conquer the Ming dynasty and rule China for over 250 years. The change from khan to emperor represented a significant shift in the state’s identity and ambitions.

Encounter with Yuan Chengzhi

In the novel, Yuan Chengzhi, driven by his desire to avenge his father’s wrongful execution and to oppose the Later Jin forces that threatened the Ming dynasty, attempted to assassinate Huangtaiji. However, the attempt was unsuccessful. Yuan Chengzhi was surrounded and captured by Yuzhenzi, who struck him three times with finger techniques, demonstrating the formidable martial arts skills of the Later Jin’s defenders.

This encounter demonstrates the challenges that Yuan Chengzhi faced in his quest for justice and the powerful forces arrayed against him. The fact that Huangtaiji was protected by such skilled martial artists as Yuzhenzi highlights the strength and organisation of the Later Jin state.

Role in the novel

Representing the Later Jin threat

Huangtaiji’s appearance in the novel represents the ongoing threat that the Later Jin posed to the Ming dynasty. As the khan (and later emperor) of the Later Jin, he symbolises the northern forces that would eventually overwhelm the Ming and establish Qing rule over China.

Yuan Chengzhi’s attempt to assassinate Huangtaiji reflects the protagonist’s commitment to opposing the Later Jin, even as he also opposed the corrupt Ming government that had executed his father.

The complexity of political opposition

Yuan Chengzhi’s encounter with Huangtaiji highlights the complexity of the political situation. Yuan Chengzhi opposed both the corrupt Ming government and the Later Jin forces, finding himself caught between two opposing powers. His attempt to assassinate Huangtaiji demonstrates his active opposition to the Later Jin threat, even as he also worked against the Ming government that had wronged his family.

Protection by Yuzhenzi

Huangtaiji’s protection by Yuzhenzi during the assassination attempt demonstrates the Later Jin’s ability to attract and employ skilled martial artists. Yuzhenzi, who was Mu Renqing’s evil junior brother and a powerful antagonist in the novel, served the Later Jin, highlighting the diverse forces that were arrayed against Yuan Chengzhi and the Ming dynasty.
