Chrysanthemum Sword

Chrysanthemum Sword (simplified: 菊剑, traditional: 菊劍, Jyutping: guk1 gim3, pinyin: Jú Jiàn) was one of the Four Sword Maidens of Lingjiu Palace, identical quadruplets raised by the Tianshan Child Granny as her handmaidens. She later served Xuzhu when he succeeded the Child Granny as the leader of the Palace.

Biography

Discovery and adoption

Chrysanthemum Sword and her three sisters were abandoned by their biological parents as infants. They were discovered by Tianshan Child Granny while she was gathering medicinal herbs in the mountains. Finding the quadruplets interesting and potentially useful, she took them back to Lingjiu Palace and raised them as her attendants.

The four sisters were named after the “Four Gentlemen” (四君子) of traditional Chinese culture—plum (梅), orchid (兰), bamboo (竹), and chrysanthemum (菊). The “Chrysanthemum” in her name symbolized endurance, nobility, and the ability to thrive in adversity, reflecting the flower’s association with perseverance and dignity. The “Sword” suffix indicated their role as personal attendants with notable abilities in swordplay.
